Exclusive interview with Maisie Williams
Jan 24, 2012 | As her acting debut young actress Maisie Williams plays Arya Stark on the HBO fantasy drama "Game of Thrones" which is based on the fantasy saga by George R. R. Martin. In this interview Maisie talks about how she settled in, how she experiences working on set with her co-stars and what she likes most about her work.
1. Playing the part of Arya Stark on "Game of Thrones" is your acting debut. What was it like when you found yourself in front a camera and for a huge HBO production no less?
It was a bit scary but also exciting. Everything was so new and different; but I soon settled in and got to know everyone. It really is great fun! The whole thing is filmed out of sequence and my first scene was standing on one leg on the stairs in Kings Landing with Sean but he was really nice
2. How would you describe Arya? What do you like most about her?
Arya is a tomboy quite feisty and brave and very loyal, she gets that from her father! I like that she is not afraid to speak her mind even if it gets her into trouble and might not always be the safest thing to do!
3. Your character Arya went through a lot in the first season of "Game of Thrones". Which scene was the most challenging or most emotional one?

4. In real life are you more an Arya type of girl or more the Sansa type? Both have their pros and cons, which one is closer to you?
I think I am more of an Arya type, quite practical, a bit of a tomboy and I don’t always say the right thing!
5. Did you read George R.R. Martin's books the show is based upon? Are there any storylines or scenes coming up for Arya you are really nervous about?
I have not read the books but my parents have and they fill me in on what’s happening. I will read them when I am a bit older. I’m not really nervous about any upcoming scenes just excited!
6. What would you like to see as Arya's endgame?
Arya becoming Queen of Westeros reunited with Nymeria!
7. You've had a lot of swordplay scenes. Was it hard learning the choreography or did you enjoy it?
I really enjoyed the choreography for the sword fighting scenes. As a dancer I am used to having to learn dance routines and this was very much like that, Miltos and Buster were great to work with. It was tiring but I was happy with the end result.
8. Isaac Hempstead-Wright and you are the youngest members of the cast. What was it like to find your way around the huge cast and set?
Everyone was great on set there is always someone there to help with any questions or problems. The rest of the cast were very welcoming, and we very soon became good friends with many of them we were treated really well and didn’t feel like the new kids for long!
9. You had a lot of scenes with Sean Bean. What was it like working with him?
Sean is really nice; he is quite quiet on set and reads a lot but is also happy to chat. It was wonderful to work with him, the way he can give so much with one look is something I will always remember.
10. Are there funny experiences you made on the set of "Game of Thrones" that you can tell us about?
A few, I hit Miltos and Buster with the wooden swords several times! The dogs were really funny and not always good at doing what they were supposed to.
11. If you could choose two other characters from "Game of Thrones" to have their own spin-off with your character Arya, who would it be? Why would you choose them and what kind of show would it be?
That would be Hot Pie and Gendry. Ben and Joe were great fun to work with (so was Eros as Lommy, but I can only have two!) It could be their further adventures and we could travel around Westeros getting into trouble......sounds a bit like season two!
12. Are you a fan yourself of any pop cultural phenomenon, TV/movie, music or literature?
I like alternative music, Kate Nash, Two Door Cinema Club, Florence & the Machine; my favourite films are "Super 8", "Black Swan" and "Wanted".
13. You are going to be at the Throne Con in England next year. Have you been at a fan convention before? Are you excited or also nervous to meet so many fans?
Really excited! I have attended a couple of signings and it’s great to meet the fans, everyone is always so nice
14. Since myFanbase is an online magazine about TV series, do you have a favorite show?
I like the Top Model shows and of course "Game of Thrones"!!
Thank you, Maisie, we wish you all the best for your future!
Thank you
Maisie x
