Interview with Hailey Sole
July 25, 2015 | Young actress Hailey Sole talks about her upcoming Netflix series "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day in Camp" and how much fun she had working on the show. You know Hailey as Betsey, Dell Parker's daughter on "Private Practice", or from "Criminal Minds", in which she recently played the niece of Jennifer Love Hewitt's character Kate Callahan.
German translation of the interview.
1. You have a new show coming up, Netflix's "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp", a satirical comedy anda prequel to the movie from 2001. What were you most excited about when you signed on to the project?
When I first signed on to the project of "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp", I was really excited about being able to work with such incredible and experienced set of actors. I had the opportunity to really learn from them. Also, since many of the actors on the show are comedians, I was looking forward to being on a really fun set, and that’s exactly what I got. Everyone was always cracking jokes and keeping it interesting.
2. Why should viewers tune in, what makes the show compelling?
"Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp" is very compelling, because it is hilarious and will definitely keep everyone interested. The show is about Camp Firewood and the first day at this camp in the summer of 1981. It will show the friendships and relationships that will grow throughout camp. It will always keep a smile on your face, and you will not stop laughing.
3. You got into acting at a very young age. What is working in movies and TV as a kid like? Do you still have time for things from a "normal childhood"?
Since I started acting at such a young age, it doesn’t seem weird to think of myself as an actor now. Working on TV shows and movies is like an extra-curricular activity to me. Some kids play sports and I act. Also, I find it very easy to maintain a "normal childhood". I go to a regular school. Not a lot of my friends act, so there isn't any jealousy or competition involved. I also always try to find time for my friends and put a lot of my time into other activities, such as cheer and the school musicals. I think that I find it easy to have a balanced and "normal" life, because I focus on things other than acting.
4. Growing up working with people like Bradley Cooper, Jon Hamm and Chris Pine, is meeting celebrities a completely laid-back thing or do you sometimes get starstruck meeting someone?
Over the years, I have learned that actors are just normal people that are very good at their job. For the most part, I don’t get starstruck over meeting people, but there are a few people that I might get a little bit excited to see. It is definitely always cool to meet someone that is very talented and can give great advice.
5. On "Private Practice" you played Betsey, Dell Parker's daughter. Did you do something special to bond with Chris Lowell to get the family vibe across?
When I first met Chris Lowell on "Private Practice", we automatically had a kind of father-daughter connection that played very well on the screen. He was definitely always very kind to me and he took me under his wing. The family vibe just kind of came along with us as we acted.
6. What is working on a usually dark and gritty crime show like "Criminal Minds" like for you?
For me, working on a dark and gritty show like "Criminal Minds" wasn’t really that scary. The truth is, after the director calls cut everyone is joking around and laughing, so it doesn’t feel exactly like it would if it was real. That does not change the fact that the role I had to play on the show was still very difficult and had a lot of depth of emotion. It was probably the hardest role I’ve had to play so far.
7. Since myFanbase is an online magazine about U.S. tv shows, we would like to know what your favorite shows are?
I watch a very wide variety of shows. They range from Disney channel and Nickelodeon shows, to "Modern Family" and "The Middle", all the way to "The Walking Dead". I also enjoy some shows like "Gossip Girl", "Pretty Little Liars" and "Friends". I don’t usually have a lot of time to watch TV, so I often times watch Netflix when I have free time to catch up on some shows.
Thank you for the interview, Hailey, we wish you all the best for your future!
