Interview with New Century Classics
We got the opportunity to do an interview with Dana from "New Century Classics". She talks about influences on their music, what experiences she made together with their bandmates and much more.
The interview is © myFanbase 2008. Please do not copy it to other websites or message boards.
1. How would you describe your music in one sentence?
Melodic and hopeful instrumental rock.
2. Was there something like a light bulb moment when you were young, maybe a concert, a certain song or a record that made you dream about a career as a musician?
I've lived quite a music-centred life for a long time, but it wasn't until I went to university and was nearly failing all my non-music courses did I realize that maybe I should stick to what I know! I think we're all passionate about music and we're just happy to have met each other at the right time.
3. Are there any artists that might have influenced you or inspired you some time?
We all come from different musical backgrounds, and mine (not surprisingly being a violin player I suppose) is from classical music, but I definitely rebelled against that growing up. Certainly Nigel Kennedy being a completely insane guy made me re-consider the lameness of classical music as a child.
4. How do you develop your songs? What part comes first, music or lyrics?
Our songs develop in many different ways. Sometimes one of us comes up with the main ideas at home (often it's our guitar player Marek) and we kind of fill in the gaps all together. Many of our songs were created just from jamming and grew organically that way. As for lyrics... maybe one day!
5. What song is most important to you? Why and how did it develop?
For me the most important song is always the one we've composed most recently! How fickle is that? I guess when you play this stuff over and over it's easy to get sick of songs unfortunately. Our most recent song is one we've yet to play at a concert - we've dubbed it 'post-cards'. It was just one of those songs that grew out of a few ideas at practice and practically exploded into a song within a few hours. The rush you get during that time is irreplaceable. I can't wait to play it live.
6. In what aspects did your music change compared to when you started to make music?
When we first started the band we were definitely a lot more hesitant and we were of course still learning about each other, let alone the music we were playing. By now we've spent so much time together we practically read each others' minds.
7. What has been the best experience so far, together as a band?
I think signing our first record contract and going away to record songs in a proper music studio was a first for most of us - we're unlikely to forget that one! Up until that time I think we felt pretty alienated by the music scene in Poland and on that day we finally felt a bit of love.
8. What can you tell us about your current projects?
These days we are finishing writing the new songs that will end up on our album which we plan to release at the end of this year.
9. And what are you aspiring to in the future, what do you want to achieve?
All we want is to record an album we're happy with and play as many gigs as possible - hopefully to a packed audience and hopefully... outside of Poland? Maybe in Germany? What do you think? :)
10. With whom would you like to go on tour?
So far we've mostly played concerts with bands that are either our friends or are on our label. It would be nice to finally tour with a band that really matches our style.
11. What record would we find in your CD-player right now?
Tough one! Personally I'm not one of those people that listens to one band or one album over and over - I'm too hungry to discover new music all the time! One band I've totally fallen in love with this year though has been Efterklang - and what an amazing live show... I will never shut up about it!!
12. What do you think, as artists, about platforms like mySpace?
MySpace has been vital for the growth of our band. Even now we don't have an official website, and only a mySpace - we rely on it completely to communicate with our fans and just let the world know what we're up to. It's a great platform for artists of all levels of popularity to reach their audience in a really accessible format. It would be great if there was something a bit more stable out there or maybe even a way to easily present your music online without relying on someone else - a Wordpress for bands maybe?
13. myFanbase is a website that is devoted to American television shows. Do you have a favorite show?
I don't think any of us are big TV watchers, but I think one show we've all had a small obsession with is "House". Great show!
