Interview with Julia Marcell
We got the opportunity to do an interview with Julia Marcell, a Polish singer and songwriter who's biggest dream came true. She explains us how she describes her music, what dreams she has for her future and what else she would like to achieve.
The interview is © myFanbase 2009. Please do not copy it to other websites or message boards.
1. How would you describe your music in one sentence?
I like to call what I do classical punk - classical because of my ambitions and approach to writing, and punk because of the raw and honest execution.
2. Was there something like a light bulb momemt where were young, maybe a concert, a certain song or a record that made you dream about a career as a musician?
When I was 4 my parents started taking me regularly to the theatre for children and I remember being completely blown away. That must have been the time when I fell in love with the stage and begun to develop a desire to perform.
3. Are there any artists that might have influenced you some time?
For sure. I often turn to other artists for inspiration, but, to be honest, it's always the thing of the moment. That's why I never liked to answer these questions, by the time the interview is out there, I see things from a different perspective and come up with yet better name of an artist who truly influenced me.
4. How do you develop your songs? What part comes first, music or lyrics?
First comes the idea - I record it and then work with it. Sometimes "working with it" means putting it aside for many months until I feel absolutely sure which direction it should take, but sometimes this direction manifests itself right from the start. To some point I always write the music together with the lyrics because the melody of the words influences the song greatly. In this aspect the song itself tells from the beginning what it wants to be about.
5. What song is most important to you? Why and how did it develop?
It's always the song which I'm currently working on.
6. In what aspects did your music change compared to when you started to make music?
It became more advanced musically, lyrically, more challenging to create and less based on instinct itself. I used to write very fast, now I polish every song for a long time, taking care of the structure, the expression, the arrangements . It's more work of a brain now, which I don't necessary find more pleasant, but definitely more rewarding at the moment.
7. What has been the best experience so far, as an artist?
Working with Moses Schneider on my album "It might like you". We recorded it live in Chez Cherie studio in Berlin, together with friends who are also amazing musicians. We had great fun and I think a lot of this attitude has been preserved on the record.
8. What can you tell us about your current projects?
I'm currently working on a cover song. It's quite a challenge, because I love the original so much, the only reasonable approach seemed to be deconstructing the song completely, which I did. We almost finished recording, soon we'll be mixing the song and after that hopefully it will see the light of the day.
9. And what are you aspiring to in the future, what do you want to achieve?
I always aim at creating something that is the best I can do at the given moment, so my plan for the future would be to never loose this approach and keep getting better. Then, if my calculations are right, after certain amount of time and a series of attempts, I can make something truly spectacular. ;-)
10. With whom would you like to go on tour?
Good musicians who are also fun to be around.
11. What record would we find in your CD-player right now?
"The Alternative" by IAMX
12. What do you think, as artists, about platforms like MySpace?
I think they are great tools to reach people.
13. myFanbase is a website that is devoted to American television shows. Do you have a favorite show?
"South Park", I'm a big fan.
