Interview with Emily's Army

Luckily you never need an explanation for humor, otherwise you would have to answer some questions about Emily's Army. Between all the Rise Againsts and Anti-Flags you need a band that makes fun.

1. How would you describe your music in one sentence?

It is incredible if you think it is.

2. Was there something like a light bulb moment when you were young, maybe a concert, a certain song or a record that made you dream about a career as a musician?

We didn't think we were going to do anything with it until we realized that we could write songs. It was like all of the sudden a light bulb clicked in our heads, like you said, and we could write, and that's when we realized we could get better and do shows and all that stuff.

3. Are there any artists that might have influenced you or inspired you some time?

Ya, Stiff Little Fingers, Elvis Costello, stuff like that. Genghis kan. Superman.

4. How do you develop your songs? What part comes first, music or lyrics?

It's more of a melody that comes first. Usually melodies to choruses and stuff like that.

5. What song is most important to you? Why and how did it develop?

Um. There isn't one in particular but two that are pretty well written are "Broadcast This" and "I wanna be remembered".

6. In what aspects did your music change compared to when you started to make music?

We play a lot faster now and our voices are getting less childish.

7. What has been the best experience so far, together as a band?

I have to say it was pretty awesome opening for Foxboro Hot Tubs and then two weeks later for The Phenomenauts and Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children Macnuggits.

8. What can you tell us about your current projects?

Haha "projects". Well I don't know what Cole has been working on because he's always so secretive with most of his songs but I've been working on this song called "The Rescuers" and also this other riff which unfortunately I haven't found lyrics for yet. But we dont try to force them out of us. Songs come from experiences and stuff like that.

9. And what are you aspiring to in the future, what do you want to achieve?

We know one thing for sure, if we get big, we don't want to do it the wrong way. We want to do everything on our own and earn popularity. (This is very hard to do).

10. With whom would you like to go on tour?

It depends on where and what kind of shows. It would be awesome to tour with the Cute Lepers who are one of our favorite punk bands, but for a California tour it'd be sick to tour with a more beach punk type of band or ska/reggae something like that. I dig that kind of music.

11. What record would we find in your CD-player right now?

More like record player! Records are way cooler than CDs (not to be a hipster or anything) but I'm telling you ever since we started going to this record store called 1-2-3-4 go!!! on 40th street in Oakland music listening has been way cooler for us. I like listening to the harder they come soundtrack, Joey likes Social Distortion and The Replacements (as do most of us), Travis is obsessed with Rancid, and right now Cole has been listening to Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, The Misfits, and this old compilation called Turn it around.

12. What do you think, as artists, about platforms like MySpace?

I mean, it's useful to get your music heard nowadays, but other than that it's not that cool.

13. myFanbase is a website that is devoted to American television shows. Do you have a favorite show?

Not any in particular.
