Fan Art interview with Benedetta Rebecchi

"I find comfort in painting subjects with blood or scars, which show that what the character has inside is more than scars on the skin."

What is fan art for you and does your style reflect something about your relationship to the character you are painting or drawing?

I love fan art because everyone has the opportunity to show particular aspects of the personality of the depicted character. My fan art totally reflects what I feel for the character. There are some I'd like to paint for various reasons (actor's skills, importance in the story), but they are more difficult to do than others. I have to feel a kind of love or bond to be able to paint them to the best.

What are the easiest and the hardest parts of the artistic process?

The simplest part of the process is to think about which scene to paint, I always have so many in my mind (... if I had nothing to do I could continue to draw without stopping) and then do the initial sketch. Technically the hardest part is to give the right shadows to the figure. I always try to give the right degree of darkness or brightness, often to emphasize the dark part of the character I'm painting. The most beautiful part for me is painting the eyes, in my drawings they are the most important thing, I would like them to show emotions as if they were real. Another very complicated thing often are the clothes (those of Versailles are difficult), in fact I always simplify them a lot. I know this is my shortcoming, but I can't put the same feeling into painting clothes as into painting faces... I hope they are, however, acceptable.

Do you feel like with fan art you can put a lot of yourself into a piece, tell your own story?

I think in the fan art there is something of us, in choosing the subject, in their expression, in the colors. Personally, I prefer dramatic, intense scenes, I find comfort in painting subjects with blood or scars, which show that what the character has inside is more than scars on the skin. Painting gives the chance to pull out the emotional side of ourselves.

What is it about Versailles that inspires you and draws you to share your art with the Versailles Family?

Versailles inspires my paintings for the complexity of the characters, the actors are able to highlight many aspects, they make them so real. Versailles family is always so supportive, it's a real family, you can feel affection and appreciation, it's a privilege for me to share my paintings with all those who are part of it.

Which is your favourite piece or style (of your own) and why?

My favorite piece of work is always the next one. I think I'll continue to use the black background because it gives strength to the character, so my favorite style is the current one.

And last but not least, what are your favourite TV shows and what do you enjoy about them?

My favorite shows are so many, I could fill a page, so I just mention "Game of Thrones", "Vikings", "Doctor Who", "Medici: Masters of Florence", "The Borgias" and obviously "Versailles". I like historical drama, I love medieval and Renaissance history and everything that has to do with it (even if not totally true to the real historical facts). I like series where good and bad are not distinct and opposite, but each character has different shades and makes certain choices based on their personal experiences and sometimes their weaknesses.

Thank you for the chat, Benedetta!
