1. Your career began with roles in the scifi and mystery genre. Do you like these genres or do you prefer other ones like drama or comedy?
I always have fun playing roles in the SciFi and mystery genre. I find it less intense and emotionally challenging when compared to doing drama. BUT…. I love doing drama. Good drama is always challenging and I find it very stimulating as an actor. It's rare that I get to do comedy, but I did recently do a guest spot on a fun teen comedy called "The Troop" (Nickelodeon Network). It was a blast and I had to try not to laugh during a few of the hilarious scenes.
2. How did you become a part of "Life Unexpected"? Did you audition for a part in particular?
Yes, they held auditions in Vancouver and I went in for the role of Fern and didn’t find out till the next month that I had gotten the gig. I had almost forgotten about it by that point and was so pleased to hear I was on the show.
3. Was it always planned that your character is seen in several episodes or was that decision made spontaneously?
I think its common for series to have outlines for an entire season then they start to write detailed scripts as the episodes start shooting. The writers build on the storyline and when conflict comes up, certain characters are needed. That happens to be the social worker in this case! Initially, it was not known if I would recur.
4. Did you expect that "Life Unexpected" would get a second season? Were you worried that it would not be renewed?
I was not surprised that the show would get another season. The concept was so original, and genuinely written with believable characters. The cast is so amazing as are the producers and directors. The genre it captures stems from teens to adults and I believe it has something for everyone’s interest. I would have been shocked if it did not go again.
5. Are we going to see your character in season 2?
I sure hope so. They don’t tell you these things. I just get a call 2 weeks in advance asking if my schedule is clear.
6. You've already played a lot of roles and you have seen all different kinds of sets. What is always the same and what new experiences did you make in the set of "Life Unexpected"?
What’s always the same is the great food!! Also, the great crew. Vancouver is known for having really amazing crews. In terms of sets, I am always blown away at how intricate and detailed they are, especially on a show with a good budget. I’d have to say the new experience I had on the 'LUX' set was having a character that returned throughout the show. Spending so much time on set allowed me to really build on who I believed 'Fern' to be. It was so interesting to see what I would be doing next. It was also great to go back to a cast and crew that I knew over an entire season.
7. Do you have any new projects coming up that you can tell us about?
I’m presently pitching a script I wrote about pregnant drug users at a rehab unit in a hospital. It is based on work I have done in the world’s only obstetric rehab unit which is located in Vancouver. Prior to becoming an actor, I was a nurse at this hospital and continue to do some work with these patients. I wanted to make a show based on my experiences in this unique setting, to educate the public about the realities of these women. My show is called 'Hope Square'. Fingers crossed!
8. What do you like to do in your free time? What are your hobbies?
Besides writing, I love to be outdoors, doing power walks with friends, working out, dining out, and mostly, spending time with my husband and 2 year old. I’m also crazy about 'shabby chic-ing' furniture. I’ve done pieces for all my close friends and even some neighbors!
9. If you could put together an entire crew for a movie or show: Who would be the director? Who would be the writer? And who would be in the leading role(s)?
Well…. Naturally, the show would be "Hope Square", that would make me the writer! I would love it to be directed by Debbie Allen, and of course, I would be the lead along with my husband Colin Lawrence (most known for "Battlestar Galactica"). That being said, if Cate Blanchett was free, it would be an honor and a dream to have her involved in my project!
10. Is there a show currently airing which you would like to play a part in?
Yes!! Lots of them, but I would love to be in "Grey’s Anatomy" or "Desperate Housewives".
11. Since myFanbase is an online magazine about TV series, do you have a favorite one?
I’d have to say "Will and Grace" is my all time favorite series but I also loved "Ugly Betty". Also, my husband and I are totally into "Dexter" and "Californication". We have a blast watching 3-4 episodes in a row on dvd when our daughter finally goes to sleep!!
